What is fertility preservation?

This is a set of actions aimed at preserving biological material (eggs, sperm, embryos freezing) in order to realize reproductive intentions in the future.

Indications medical:

  • before chemotherapy or radiation therapy;
  • aggressive therapy of concomitant diseases (autoimmune diseases);
  • removal / resection of the ovary in benign conditions (endometriosis, cystic formations).

Indications non-medical::

  • delayed motherhood.

In this case, there is no medical indication, but the woman is not financially and psychologically ready for motherhood at the moment. A woman gives herself some time to pursue career growth, find a suitable partner, improve her financial condition, and psychological comfort. This ensures readiness for conscious motherhood and increases the chances of having her own genetic child in the future.

Fertility preservation options for women:

  • vitrification of oocytes;
  • vitrification of embryos;
  • cryopreservation of ovarian tissue.

Fertility preservation options for men:

  • sperm cryopreservation;
  • vitrification of spermatozoids obtained from testicular tissue.

Vitrification of oocytes (egg cells):

  1. thorough examination;
  2. daily hormonal injections (10-12 days);
  3. follicle puncture (15-20 minutes);
  4. immediate freezing (vitrification) of oocytes.

Vitrification of embryos:

  1. thorough examination;
  2. daily hormonal injections (10-12 days);
  3. follicle puncture (15-20 minutes);
  4. fertilization by ICSI method;
  5. vitrification of embryos (5th day of development).

It is preferable to vitrify chromosomally suitable embryos for transfer (selected with PGT).

Benefits of embryo freezing:

  1. increase of the pregnancy likelihood due to repeated transfers of embryos into the uterine cavity. Vitrification of embryos is a kind of "insurance" if pregnancy does not occur in this cycle;
  2. decrease of the drug (hormonal) load on the woman's body during repeated transfers because there is no need for repeated stimulation of superovulation and follicle puncture;
  3. a significant reduction of the financial expenses of patients;
  4. the possibility of conceiving second and subsequent children in the future;
  5. the possibility to preserve the remaining embryos of good quality;
  6. the possibility of sharing embryos with other infertile couples.
