ICSI
What is ICSI - Intracitoplasmic Sperm Injection?
ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection into the egg) is the injection of one spermatozoid without visible pathologies into the egg with the help of special microinstruments. The procedure is carried out in ART programs, as a rule, in case of severe forms of infertility.
Indications for the use of the ICSI procedure:
-
- infertility due to the male factor. For example, oligozoospermia, asthenozoospermia, teratozoospermia, as well as cryptozoospermia, at the reduced hyaluronic acid binding assay (less than 80% of mature spermatozoids), at the increased MAR test (50% or more);
-
azoospermia (the case when spermatozoids are absent in the ejaculate and are obtained in the course of a testicular biopsy procedure);
-
patients who are 35 years old and older;
-
at the reduced ovarian reserve of a woman;
-
previous unsuccessful attempt with standard IVF, as well as when fertilization did not occur or the fertilization rate was very low;
-
the desire of the couple to increase the effectiveness of the ART program.
Benefits of ICSI
The ICSI method assumes that the embryologist selects only mature, healthy oocytes and mature, morphologically eligible spermatozoids, which significantly increases the chances of having a healthy baby.
During the ICSI procedure, one of the most fertile spermatozoids is injected directly into the egg under the control of the embryologist.
ICSI process
The ICSI procedure is performed using a high-tech inverted microscope. The embryologist selects one of the most active and morphologically suitable spermatozoids from specially prepared sperm and immobilizes it. Then the spermatozoid is drawn into the microneedle. The embryologist punctures the egg membrane, which is fixed with a micropipette, and injects the spermatozoid directly into the cytoplasm of the egg.
Fertilized oocytes are placed in a nutrient medium and then the cultivation process occurs in the same way as in standard IVF.
